A few months ago, I swapped my old internet box to subscribe to Freebox Pop, the most attractive internet offer from Free, from my point of view anyway. What motivated me to subscribe? First of all, its fiber speed, which allows, according to its technical sheet, to reach 5 Gb/s shared for downloading. Practical for teleworking.

Another strong point that attracted me: its streaming platforms included for a few months, which notably allowed me to test Prime Video and Canal+ Series (which was included when I subscribed to it). Finally, I was curious to discover the famous TV decoder and its OQEE by Free platform.

There remained one point on which I was, I admit, quite skeptical: the Wi-Fi repeater. Free and included on request with the Freebox Pop, it promised more powerful Wi-Fi streaming to my home. But in effect, was that really the case? So, I went ahead and decided to test this little Wi-Fi box which far exceeded my expectations…

A classic flow, on my smartphone, without a repeater

After receiving the Freebox Pop, I rushed to install everything. But, before connecting the Pop repeater, I wanted to measure the Wi-Fi speed that my smartphone received by connecting to the modem, which is located upstairs in my home. With my iPhone

The result is not really sensational: my download connection barely reaches 40 Mb/s and does not exceed 30 Mb/s. As for my latency, it rises almost to 20 ms… certainly, it’s still more than my speed in 4G but that doesn’t break a duck’s three legs either!

So, I took my Pop Wi-Fi repeater out of its cardboard box and that’s where the magic happens…

A Wi-Fi speed that clearly exceeds my expectations!

It is good to know that my internet installation is clearly optimized since the TV decoder as well as the Wi-Fi repeater can be connected to the box directly via RJ45 cables. So I plug the Ethernet cable into the Wi-Fi repeater as well as its power cable, it starts, my smartphone connects to it and here we go again for a new internet connection test.

Fortunately I’m sitting on my sofa because the speed my Wi-Fi connection is now reaching is beyond my expectations! With a download speed which fluctuates around 450 Mb/s and 245 Mb/s for transfer, I multiplied my internet speed by 10 thanks to this free tip. Latency is also reduced since it decreases by 5 ms!

In short, you will have understood, I am positively surprised by the Pop Wi-Fi repeaterwhich, despite its “only” Wi-Fi 5 compatibility, clearly allows you to benefit from an excellent wireless connection and for next to nothing since the Wi-Fi repeater is free on request, only €10 activation fee is charged.

Certainly, 450 Mb/s is less than the speed I could obtain right next to my internet box but it is much more practical on a daily basis!
