In its weekly letter, the CIES Football Observatory focuses on the fast running index, based on three variables: the frequency of high speed running, the average maximum speed reached by the players and the frequency of their accelerations. On the sample of 30 international championships studied, we find two English leagues at the top: the Premier League and the Championship, proof if any that the famous kick and rush still has good days ahead of him. Serie A takes third place on the podium.
But looking at the entire Top 10, we notice that Ligue 2 (sixth) ranks two ranks above the French elite. Concretely, this means that 84.5% of sprints exceed the 25 km/h mark and that 81.2% of players’ accelerations are greater than or equal to 10.8 km/h. The first figure is significantly higher in Ligue 1 (89.3%), but the second, significantly lower (52.1%). Basically, we run faster, but less frequently.
Next season, we’ll have to ditch the McDonald’s and start doing a little more treadmill work instead.
