sos. · Julian Nagelsmann, the German national coach, is facing a premiere in the European Championship round of 16 in Dortmund (from 9 p.m.), and in more ways than one. It is his first knockout game with the German team, it is his first appearance as national coach in Dortmund and he will change his starting lineup for the first time in this tournament against Denmark. The latter in particular is remarkable in itself: Nagelsmann, who otherwise rarely misses the opportunity to adapt to an opponent with a variety of personnel changes, has so far been true to his selection of players in this tournament.

Now the external circumstances alone are forcing him to make changes: first and foremost the suspension of central defender Jonathan Tah. There was also uncertainty as to whether Antonio Rüdiger, who was injured in the final phase of the match against Switzerland, would play. One thing is clear now: Rüdiger is in the starting eleven. Nico Schlotterbeck will replace Tah in the team.

Füllkrug does not have the worst goal ratio

Nagelsmann was pressured to make changes in central defence. However, he could have made changes in attack at his own discretion. Niclas Füllkrug from BVB made an impression with his goal against Switzerland, as he generally does when he plays for the national team. The striker, who is mostly used as a substitute, has an impressive goal rate. On average, he scored every sixty minutes.

But shortly before the game it was clear: Füllkrug was the substitute. Kai Havertz was allowed to play up front against the Danes from the start. And what was even more surprising: Florian Wirtz was rotated out of the team. Bayern professional Leroy Sané was given his chance in his place.

Dortmund is a special place for the Germans

For Füllkrug, the Dortmund player, it would be a home game against Denmark if he is allowed onto the pitch. Nagelsmann only knows the atmosphere there as a Bundesliga coach, and he knows very well how loud it can be there.

Now Dortmund is still a special place for the Germans, but the aura of being unbeatable there in the Westfalenstadion has long since disappeared: in 2006, the Germans met Italy in the semi-finals of the World Cup and lost to the eventual world champions in extra time.

The German starting eleven: new; Kimmich, Rüdiger, Schlotterbeck, Room; Andrich, Kroos; Sane, Gundogan, Musiala; Havertz.
