Sergei Berezin, who played seven seasons in the National Hockey League, died at the age of 52, we learned on Wednesday.

The cause of death has not been released.

Berezin, who was originally from Russia, was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 10th round, 256th overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

He played five seasons with the Maple Leafs, breaking the 20-goal mark four times during his time in Toronto.

The forward had his best season in 1998-99 when he scored 37 goals and collected 59 points. He added six goals and six assists in 17 playoff games. The Leafs then reached the Eastern final, before losing to Buffalo in five games.

Berezin was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for Mikael Renberg following the 2000-01 season.

He then had a brief stint with the Montreal Canadiens. Acquired in return for Brian Savage, he played 29 games with the Habs. His greatest moment in Montreal was this goal scored on January 27, 2002, the 10,000th home goal in team history.

In 502 games with Toronto, Phoenix, Montreal, Chicago and Washington, he scored a total of 286 points, including 160 goals. He added 30 points in the playoffs.
