Sinner attacked by Bild. A very heavy, ungenerous criticism, and with a non-random timing, that of one of the most famous newspapers in Germany towards Jannik. A few hours before the Australian Open final against the German Alexander Zverev, the online version comes out with a fiery article against the Italian tennis player. The title leaves no room for interpretation: “Zverev in the final against Skandal-Sinner”. The world number one against the number two is a match that promises to be a spectacle in Melbourne, but according to Bild it is not right that Jannik was allowed to get to play it: “There is a shadow of doping hanging over the Australian Open final – we read – the fact that Sinner is in the Grand Slam final for the second consecutive time after the US Open is a farce for many players, experts and observers of the scene. The fact that he is allowed to play in Melbourne and defend his title is unusual – this would not happen in other sports, given his background. Novak Djokovic (37) e Nick Kyrgios (29) particularly criticized the approach in this doping case.”
Bild, incredible accusations against Sinner
The accusation against the Italian tennis player is sensational: “Despite testing positive twice, Sinner was allowed to continue playing without disqualification and even went on to win the US Open, his second Grand Slam title in 2024 after the one in Melbourne. What is disconcerting is the fact that it hasn’t been talked about for a long time and that Sinner can cheerfully win in Australia as if nothing had happened. Sinner will only have to appear before the CAS of Lausanne for the hearing on 16 and 17 April. He risks a disqualification of up to two years”. The German newspaper also states that Zverev deserved to be number one in the world: ”Zverev would have been world number one a long time ago if the Sinner case had not been swept under the carpet. The other thing is that he can become number one if Sinner is disqualified.”
Zverev makes Germany dream: a men’s Slam has been missing since 1996
Germany has been waiting to see one of its athletes win a Slam title for almost thirty years. The last one was Boris Becker to Australian Open in 1996. In the women’s category, Kerber won the title at Wimbledon in 2018. A long wait and the fear of seeing it slip away: Sinner is in fact the favorite for the final victory, even if Zverev is ahead 4-2 in the previous matches and is in great shape.
