Jannik Sinner continued to add to his ‘Big Titles’ haul on Sunday when he defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 to successfully defend the Australian Open trophy.

With his third major crown, Sinner now owns eight ‘Big Titles’, a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals. Seven of the Italian’s triumphs at those levels have come since the start of last season.

Entering 2024, Sinner had reached one major semi-final. Now the 23-year-old has claimed three of the past five Slam championships and become the first man to retain his maiden major title since Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in 2006.

By emerging victorious again at Melbourne Park, Sinner became the first Italian in history to earn three major trophies. Previously he had been tied with Nicola Pietrangeli (2) for the most Grand Slam championships in their country’s history.

One year ago, Sinner and Carlois Alcaraz split the four major championships. The two superstars have built a fascinating Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry, which extends to their battle for Big Titles supremacy. Sinner is now just one Big Title behind the 21-year-old Alcaraz, who fell in the Australian Open quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic.

Big Titles Won: Alcaraz & Sinner

Players Grand Slams NATPF 1000s Total^ (Avg)
Carlos Alcaraz 4/16 0/2 5/26 9/45 (5)
Jannik Sinner 3/21 1/3 4/33 8/57 (7.1)

^Includes Olympic Games gold medals and tournament participations.

Both men are succeeding at a historic clip tallying Big Titles. Alcaraz has claimed one Big Title for every five of those tournaments he has played, while Sinner is nearly at one for every seven.

The only men who own a greater rate of Big Titles won per tournament played than Alcaraz are Novak Djokovic (3.2), Rafael Nadal (3.5), Roger Federer (4.4) and Pete Sampras (4.9). Andre Agassi (6.1) remains ahead of Sinner.

Sinner and Alcaraz are two of the 12 men who have earned at least three major titles before turning 24. Alcaraz owns four Slams to Sinner’s three.

The Australian Open champion now has the same number of Big Titles as former No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings Daniil Medvedev. The 28-year-old has won a major, six ATP Masters 1000 trophies and a Nitto ATP Finals crown. Sinner is two Big Titles behind the man he defeated on Sunday, 27-year-old Zverev (10). The German is a seven-time Masters 1000 champion, who has triumphed twice at the Nitto ATP Finals and claimed gold in singles at the Tokyo Olympics.
