In the eastern Mediterranean, the spy ship Kildin suffered a major fire on Thursday January 23. Another setback for the Russian fleet in the very strategic Mediterranean Sea.
The black streak continues for the Russian fleet. After the loss of cargo ship Ursa Major which sank on December 24 off the coast of Algeria, an intelligence collection vessel, the Kildin, narrowly escaped a similar fate.
Thursday January 23, early in the afternoon, while the ship is operating in the Canal de Syriaflames and thick black smoke appear at the top of its chimney. They are visible from a distance and for many minutes, indicating a probable “engine fire”.

Western navies, very present in this particularly strategic area, were able to closely follow the events. Starting with the French Navy which permanently deploys a ship in this area. “If the Western Marines followed the Kildin's misadventure minute by minute, it is because they were ready to come to their aid as required by the unwritten rules of seafarers” said a high-ranking French officer contacted by RFI, specifying, “but the Russians did not ask for any help.”
