If Marcel Pagnol left an indelible mark on French culture, Daniel Auteuil is one of its most fervent ambassadors!

His interpretation of Ugolin in Jean De Florette et Manon des Sources by Claude Berry, released in 1986, earned him the César for best actor (leading role) and the BAFTA (supporting role) the following year.

The films – shot alongside Yves Montand, Gérard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Béart – transformed his career.

The actor will give a masterclass on the subject Monday February 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Palais des Festivals.

Hosted by Thierry Frémaux and reserved for residents

The free event is organized by the City as part of the festivities in tribute to Marcel Pagnol, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death and the 130e anniversary of his birth.

And it is Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, who will host this exchange which promises to be rich in anecdotes and emotions.

The evening will continue at 8:45 p.m. with the screening of The Well Digger's Daughtera film directed by Daniel Auteuil himself. This feature film, faithful to the spirit and poetry of Pagnol, embodies the artist's passion for the timeless works of the Provençal writer.

Notice to lovers of the seventh art and Provençal heritage: the meeting is reserved for Cannes residents! Places will be distributed tomorrow, from 9 a.m. at City Hall, on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will have to present proof of address to obtain the precious sesame.

Families will be able to take part in various activities such as a Provençal shooting game, workshops on the discovery of Provençal fauna and flora, a ride on an artisanal carousel, or even attend the famous card game played by actors (entry free).

On the occasion of Grandmother's Day, Sunday March 2at 3 p.m. at the Licorne theater, the municipality presents the play “Once upon a time Marcel Pagnol from the Académie française”, performed by the La Cigale company.

Wednesday February 5the Cannes en Héritage association also presents, at 8:30 p.m., at the Espace Miramar, a show in the form of a theatrical dialogue performed by two voices: those of Vincent Fernandel and Philippe Salciccia.

The event highlights a little-known facet of Marcel Pagnol: his passion for history and his interest in the Iron Mask. All these shows are free.

Friday February 7 at 6:30 p.m., Cannes University will organize a conference at the Espace Miramar entitled “Marcel Pagnol, un autre regard”, by doctoral student Karin Hann (between 7 and 15 euros, reservation on cannes-universite.fr).
