The list of nominees for the next Oscars had barely been released on January 23 when the Los Angeles Times already listed on its site the biggest “surprises” of these announcements. On one side, there are notable absentees: the actresses Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, shunned for their respective roles in Babygirl (in theaters in ) and Maria, a biopic of Maria Callas (which will be released on February 5), or the Canadian Denis Villeneuve, who will not obtain the Oscar for best director for Dune. Part two (released February 28, 2024).

On the other side, guests considered as surprises by the Californian daily: the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres for I'm still here (in theaters), actor Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice (released October 9), or filmmaker James Mangold for A complete stranger, a biopic of Bob Dylan (expected on French screens on January 29).

Emilia Perez in Oscar history

The Hollywood Reporter, he only has eyes for Emilia Perez. Jacques Audiard's film, released in August in France, garnered 13 nominations, including best director, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña. This is the first time in the history of the Oscars that a non-English-speaking film has garnered so many nominations, underlines the publication, one of the reference readings on the Hollywood industry. It is also a record for a French film (The Artist, the film by Michel Hazanavicius, was nominated ten times in 2012).

Emilia Perez enters the annals of the ceremony for another reason, underlined by Variety, another specialized magazine: “Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the first openly trans person to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress,” she headlines on her site. Headlining, the Spanish actress plays in this feature film a Mexican narco who hires a careerist lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) to help him fake his disappearance and organize his gender transition.

The Brutalist et Wicked, the other two big favorites

And if we had to push another joke: the French Coralie Fargeat is the only woman to be nominated for the Oscar for best director, for The Substance (released in November), also emphasizes The Hollywood Reporter. Its actress Demi Moore, already rewarded at the Golden Globes, appears in the best actress category: a nomination which, if it was predictable, comes “complete his comeback in front of the spotlight”, underlines The New York Times.

In total number of nominations, Emilia Perez is therefore in the lead with 13 distinctions. The other two most nominated films, with ten citations each, are The Brutalist, a film by Brady Corbet, the portrait of a Hungarian Jewish architect (Adrien Brody) who, after surviving deportation, goes into exile in the United States (in theaters February 12), and Wicked, by Jon M. Chu, an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. As noted by New York Times, Wicked, which was a hit in the United States, “however, fails to appear in the main categories of best director and best screenplay”.

The name of the winners will be announced will be announced during the 97e Academy Awards ceremony, held in Los Angeles, California, on March 2.
