Alleged racist remarks in Plouhinec: explanations from the Ligue de Bretagne, which sanctioned AS Ménimur

The League spoke out in response to the Télégramme article, published Thursday January 16, 2025, about the amateur football match interrupted in Plouhinec, at the beginning of December, for suspicion of racist remarks. Indeed, on December 8, 2024, the Regional 2 championship match between the locals and AS Ménimur was interrupted by the referee after alleged racist remarks in the 54th minute of play.

The Ligue de Bretagne awarded Ménimur a lost match by forfeit, for “abandoning the field” and sanctioned the club with the withdrawal of one point in the championship and a fine of €100.

“The collective responsibility of clubs, officials and authorities”

“I can understand that in application of its regulations, the League cannot do otherwise than to give a winning match to Plouhinec, who respected the protocol. But from there to take away a point… Our players did not feel able to resume the match, given the tensions before and during the incident,” regretted the president of AS Ménimur Julien Théraud. Requested on Thursday, the League of Brittany communicated on the matter this Saturday, January 18.

In accordance with the laws of football, if a team decides not to resume the match, sanctions are provided for in the regulations. These provisions aim to guarantee fair and consistent management of situations that are as sensitive as they are regrettable. We emphasize that these rules, developed by national and international authorities, aim to reconcile the fight against discrimination with the smooth running of competitions. They are part of a framework which is based on the collective responsibility of clubs, officials and authorities. »
