The VAR is the deciding factor: Union again jumps over Anderlecht to third place thanks to a bizarre penalty phase

Union can still say that it is ‘best of the rest’ as third in the rankings, after title candidates Genk and Club Brugge. USG did not compete with OHL, but was the only team that was dangerous and scored after a VAR intervention.

With Anderlecht’s victory, Union had to keep the points at home to jump back to third place. Then a bizarre penalty phase in the sixteen meters of the visitors from Leuven was a bonus. Tobe Leysen got into trouble when David came to put pressure. The OHL keeper seemed to get away with it, but the footage showed him accidentally kicking David.

That was enough reason for the VAR to call referee Verboomen to the screen and he no longer hesitated to blow the penalty whistle. David kicked in the eleven meter via the post (1-0). Union dictated the law in the first twenty minutes. Tobe Leysen’s save was necessary during Ivanovic’s shot. Anyone who thought that the Unionists had left for a smooth party was disappointed.

Ivanovic not past Tobe Leysen

After all, OHL grew in the match and regularly threatened from the right through the busy Vlietinck. Due to a lack of a good final pass by the people of Leuven, there was no major danger. On the other side, Ivanovic came close to making it 2-0 on a pass from El Hadj. Tobe Leysen was in the right place to make the save with his foot.

That’s it for the goal danger before the break. The second half had little to do for a long time. Union did not necessarily have to look for the next goal. At OHL, good intentions without results increasingly resembled immaturity and powerlessness. Sadiki and Van de Perre finally had the spectators in the stands on the edge of their seats.

OHL ends with ten

One accelerated, the other cut down his last opponent. Van de Perre then came across Tobe Leysen. The visitors’ final goal also got in the way of Ivanovic’s chance. Despite those saves, things did not get easier for OHL: Kurucay had his leg blown out after a duel with Fuseini. Verboomen interpreted it as kicking and drew red.

With one man more, the Pocognoli players won the narrow victory. That is enough to take third place again in the standings. OHL has to hope that Westerlo and STVV don’t get any points tonight either.
