Former Nigerian international Gabriel Rueben has admitted that new Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has a challenging road ahead as he takes charge of the team.

The Nigeria Federation, NFF confirmed Chelle’s appointment earlier this month, tasking the former Mali coach with steering Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Super Eagles’ recent form leaves much to be desired, with no wins from four World Cup qualifiers and only three points to show for their efforts.

In an interview with Brila.net, Rueben expressed concerns over whether Chelle and his coaching team are familiar enough with the players to maximize their strengths.

“It’s not an easy task for the coach because, in situations like this, the coach and players need to cooperate to understand each other and achieve their aim,” Rueben stated.

“The coach doesn’t know most of the players, and the players need to respect the coach. In an organization like this, they need a leader, and everyone must listen to him to reach their goals together.”

Rueben also urged the players to fully support Chelle as he begins his tenure, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual respect in overcoming the team’s struggles.

Currently sitting fifth in their group, the Super Eagles will look to change their fortunes as Chelle begins his tenure with a critical World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda on March 19. Three days later, they will face Zimbabwe in another must-win clash.

The journey to redemption starts now for Chelle and the Super Eagles.
