HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The city is set to begin repairs on the Queen’s Surf seawall and promenade walkway in Kapiolani Park off Kalakaua Avenue.

Powerful south shore swells caused the walkway to collapse in last May.

Work will begin on Jan. 21 and take place between Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The project cost $3.75 million and repairs are expected to be completed within six months.

The city says the contractor, Sea Engineering Inc., will install large sandbags to establish a sediment-control zone per regulatory requirements.

Work also includes reconstructing the wall with a new concrete foundation and pouring a new walkway with stamped concrete finish.

Officials said the affected area will be restricted during construction, and are advising the public to avoid the construction zone. Personnel will be on site to monitor and enforce safety measures.

Signage will instruct pedestrians to use the Kalakaua Avenue sidewalk to access the Barefoot Cafe and Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium during construction.
