Newly married and accurate: Baumgartner secures Leipzig 4-1

Newly married and immediately in the spotlight: Christoph Baumgartner scores his first league goal of the season and secures RB Leipzig a commanding 4-1 home win against Bremen. Jürgen Klopp, Red Bull’s global football boss, was also in the stadium and watched the game.

What a start to the year for RB Leipzig: Coach Marco Rose’s team comfortably defeated Werder Bremen 4-1 on Sunday. The focus was particularly on Christoph Baumgartner, who, as a newly married player, scored his first league goal of the season and crowned Leipzig’s victory. The game took place in the presence of Jürgen Klopp, Red Bull’s new global head of soccer.

Baumgartner scores on comeback after wedding

Baumgartner came onto the field in the 65th minute and showed flashes of his class in the final phase: In the 90th minute, the 25-year-old deliberately scored from the edge of the penalty area into the corner. It was his first goal of the Bundesliga season and his fourth in all competitive games. After his wedding during the winter break, the Lower Austrian was in top form – and made everything clear with his goal.

Jürgen Klopp, who recently became global head of football for the Red Bull Group, watched the game live in the stadium. He must have liked RB Leipzig’s success: Xavi Simons set the course for victory with two goals (24th, 35th) in the first half. Simons impressed with his technique and even gave Werder’s defense chief Marco Friedl no chance.

Bremen has no chance despite Burke’s goal

Werder Bremen scored goals through Mitchell Weiser (26th) and Oliver Burke (93rd), but Leipzig remained dominant. Benjamin Sesko increased the score to 3-1 immediately after the break (47′), before Baumgartner made the final score. Nicolas Seiwald, who played as part of Leipzig’s back three, showed light and shadow: while he didn’t look good when Bremen scored the first goal, he put in a solid performance overall.
