Météo issued a strong wind alert on Sunday January 5 for nineteen departments from Vendée to the Ardennes via , which join the Rhône and the , affected by another phenomenon.

The departments of Loire and Rhône as well as 19 departments in the northern half of France were placed on orange alert for the wind during the night from Sunday to Monday in connection with an atmospheric depression, Météo France announced on Sunday January 5.

This orange vigilance begins on Sunday 8 p.m. for the Loire and the Rhône due to a “violent southerly gale occurring on average once or twice a year” in the Rhône valley, specifies Météo-France in its latest bulletin. However, the phenomenon remains less strong than storm Bert, which hit the region in November.

“Over the northern half of the country, storm Floriane will circulate quickly but intensely during the day on Monday”warns the weather forecasting organization, which places 19 departments on orange alert from Monday midnight, going from Vendée to the Ardennes and the Meuse, along a diagonal encompassing the entire Ile-de-France.

Gusts up to 120 km/h

In the departments of Rhône and Loire, the southerly wind intensified on Sunday during the day until reaching values ​​exceeding 90 to 100 km/h in gusts during the night, with locally 110 to 120 km /h. “Two peaks of violent wind are probable: the first in the middle of the night from Sunday to Monday, the second at the end of the morning-midday on Monday,” warns the body.

In the northern half, storm Floriane will enter the territory early Monday morning via the coasts of Vendée, again with gusts of around 90 to 100 km/h, locally at 110 km/h. “She shifts[ra] towards the Paris region at midday then the north-eastern regions at the start of the afternoon, then quickly evacuated towards Belgium”adds Météo-France.

The orange alert must remain in force until Monday afternoon in the 21 departments concerned. “In the northern half, there remains uncertainty about the path of the storm” and “the wind could blow equally strong” on the departments bordering the departments on orange alert, underlines Météo-France, which therefore calls for caution.
