CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — It won’t be long before that first flurry.
“We’re going to be prepared,” says Kris Koester, Public Information Officer at Champaign Public Works. He says, the city has their crews ready to take to the roads overnight, and into Sunday and Monday.
Koester adds, the city of Champaign begins preparing for snowstorms in early October. This allows the crews enough time to have equipment and salt prepared, as well as bring in additional personnel to help keep roads safe.
He says safety is their top priority, sharing they “…test our equipment, make sure our plows work, and make sure we have enough equipment and enough salt.”
Ahead of the snowy conditions, Public Works says now is the time to take precautions and safety measures. Koester encourages community members to have a full tank of gas in their cars, keep extra blankets handy, and have an emergency kit at all times.
He also advises drivers to stay off the roads for plows and salt trucks, but if driving, to allow for extra time on the road. “Use a little bit of patience and a little bit of grace to make sure that our community can stay safe throughout this.”
Trucks will begin out on the roads Saturday night into Sunday morning. Snow is expected to start early Sunday morning.
