Michel Gros will remember it. This amateur photographer, originally from Bonnevaux in , captured a moment that was as rare as it was grandiose.

A first aborted attempt

With his wife and children, Michel Gros did not want to have a New Year like the others. “We went hunting for the Northern Lights at 4 p.m. at Lac de l'Entonnoir in Bouverans (Doubs), because they announced a first peak of activity. But it didn’t do anything,” he relates.

“It’s as if we were in Siberia or Iceland”

The photographer, who remembers the northern lights of May 11, does not despair: “A second peak of activity, expected at the stroke of midnight, should follow a geomagnetic storm.”

At midnight, between two cups of crémant, the man sets his camera to long exposure, and shoots towards the north… Northern lights, with purplish-red hues and not visible to the naked eye, form on his screen, at 00 h 01. The family marvels: “It’s as if we were in Siberia or Iceland. It was a way for us to celebrate the new year.”

Polar lights have also been photographed at the summit of La Dôle. This is evidenced by photos published on the Météo Franc-comtoise Facebook page. 2025, a year of celestial beauty?
