Police warn of strong winds and fireworks on New Year’s Eve: “We strongly advise against it” (Blankenberge)
Blankenberge

The local police warns against the use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve in Blankenberge. Strong gusts of wind are expected, and therefore the use of flares is strongly discouraged. “It can cause a lot of damage.”

In Blankenberge, fireworks are only allowed on New Year’s Eve between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., and only on the beach. Yet the local police zone is already warning against the use of flares. “It is allowed, but we strongly advise against it,” said an appeal. “The RMI predicts strong winds on the coast in the coming days, which could be treacherous. A gust of wind can suddenly change direction of a fire arrow and cause a lot of damage.”

“Walk eight meters back”

People who want to make it pop should take precautions. “People get hurt every year. Take the wind direction into account: place your fireworks in the hard sand and walk at least eight meters back to the soft sand. Always be careful and read the instructions for use thoroughly.” (jve)
