– The Métropole de Lyon affirms that several measures have been put in place to help motorists.
A ban which endangers many motorists. Indeed, in an environmental logic, several French metropolises have chosen to no longer authorize traffic of the most polluting vehicles classified Crit'Air 3 from January 1, 2025, as part of the Low Emission Zone (ZFE). This measure, which aims to improve air quality, concerns nearly one in four vehicles. (135 000) in Lyon, just like two-wheelers. The consequence is that many Lyonnais find themselves unable to use their vehicle, without having the means to buy another one.
“I live in the countryside, but I work in Lyon, I have to have the car, so I don’t know how I’m going to do it”affirms Lydie, with France 3 Rhône-Alpes. For the moment, she is still uncertain about how she will be able to organize herself. “I thought about parking near a park and ride then taking the metro, but parking spaces might be a hassle”she laments. As for Habib, retired, he assures that he does not have “enough money to buy another car. I receive 1,000 euros in retirement. And then what to do with it?he asks himself.

A fine of 68 euros
In Saint-Priest, a town located east of Lyon, Crit'Air 3 vehicles are used by many modest households who do not necessarily have the means to afford another car. “We are in the process of explaining to a third of the city's 50,000 inhabitants that from January, you will no longer be able to use your cars and that we will have to do things differently. But not all people have the means to do otherwise.says Mayor LR Gilles Gascon.
The Metropolis affirms that several measures have been put in place to help motorists such as financial aid of up to 3,000 euros or exemptions for small riders. She also recalls that a fine of “68 euros for motorized two-wheelers, passenger cars and light utility vehicles” is provided for those who do not respect the wearing of the sticker.
