Squid Game season 2 is reigning supreme at Netflix and raking in rave reviews worldwide. However, while the first season of Squid Game consisted of nine long and detailed episodes, the second installment of the Netflix show has rounded up its narrative in just seven episodes.
After The Front Man killed Gi-hun’s close friend Jun-bae, the seventh episode and finale of Squid Game season two ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving Gi-hun’s future uncertain.
Since Squid Game season 2 had a relatively shorter run compared to the debut season, fans all over the world have been left wondering whether any more episodes of the second season will drop anytime soon. The short answer to this question is no.
The second season of Squid Game won’t be dropping any more episodes following the conclusion of its finale.
This is in keeping with Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk’s statement that he had initially written the second and the upcoming third seasons together in a single arc. Upon realizing that the material would be too long-drawn-out for a single season, he decided to end the second installment decisively with the seventh episode, leaving room for the third season to take over.
Here’s everything we know.
Why does Squid Game season 2 have only seven episodes?
It is no wonder that fans of Squid Game all across the globe had become accustomed to the nine-episode format that was employed by the debut season. Contrary to this, the seven-episode run of the second season came as a shock to many. Moreover, as the stakes were elevated and the seventh episode ended with a cliffhanger, fans were left wanting for more.
Speaking with Variety Magazine in a recent interview about the Netflix show, director Hwang Dong-Ryuk revealed:
“I wrote seasons two and three at the same time, and we were in production for both simultaneously, and currently we are in the post-production process for Season 3. When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3.”
The good news is that audiences won’t have to wait long before the cliffhanger of Squid Game season 7 is resolved by the upcoming season 3 of the South Korean drama. Although there isn’t an official date of release for the third season, it is known that the upcoming installment is currently in the post-production phase and will drop sometime in 2025.
Lee Byung-Hun opens up about Squid Game season 2
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Variety Magazineactor Lee Byung-Hun, who played the enigmatic character of the Front Man, opened up about his experience. When asked about his initial reaction after reading the script, Byung-Hun revealed:
“When Director Hwang decided that we would proceed with Season 2, I was curious about how the narrative would evolve. When I first got the script, I thought it would be very challenging for me as an actor, but very fun and juicy at the same time to play this three persona character. Because I have to act as Front Man, but I’m also evil.”
He continued,
“Then, sometimes, he talks about his past truthfully when living as In-ho. Then, after he goes into the game, he takes on this fake identity of Oh Young-il. So, there’s three people that I have to portray, and I knew it was going to be fun, but I had a little pressure about whether I could really pull it off. But most importantly, my heart was fluttering to take on this character.”
Squid Game season 2 is exclusively available on Netflix.
