SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Old Savannah City Mission is giving out meals and toys today, free of charge.

SOT: “We fed about 160 people for breakfast,” said Jermaine Ray, the program director at Old Savannah City Mission.

Ray and his team were up long before the sun.

SOT: “We started cooking around 4 o’clock this morning,” said Ray.

They are making it their number one goal to give people in need hot meals on Christmas Day.

“Ever since COVID you know, a lot of people lost their jobs and it’s just hard,” said Ray.

Ray says giving his day to give back, is always worth it.

“I don’t go home with my family because I know they’re okay during Christmas time but there’s a lot of underprivileged kids that aren’t alright and don’t have anybody to share the holidays with so we feel like it’s important for staff members to be here during the holidays and share time with the underprivileged kids and families in the community,” said Ray.

This Christmas also marks the third year of their annual toy drive. Kids can come in to get toys and make their day a little brighter.

“The community itself, once they heard that we were doing a toy drive for the kids, we had overwhelming support this year to come down and bless the kids to have a merry Christmas,” said Ray.

This is all a part of the year-round effort to give back to those that need it most.

“We give out clothes, we give out furniture is somebody’s in a house fire and if somebody’s moving in an area and they’re in need of furniture, we do give out furniture. And we give out food boxes as well,” said Ray.

He credits the community for coming together to help make it happen.

“We really thank you for all the support you’ve given to Old Savannah City Mission,” said Ray.
