Metz. Do you know what to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays?

There have been dark days for the technical services of the City of . Among them, the day after Fête de la Musique, and just behind December 26. In the early morning, the sidewalks were cluttered with boxes and wrapping paper but also with fir trees, sometimes still decorated. And around the PAVE (buried voluntary drop-off points), piles of leftovers from New Year's Eve.

According to Martine Nicolas, deputy for Urban Cleanliness, the people of Messina have been more disciplined for two or three years, a few dozen reports and an ecological awareness.

However, it is always useful to remember that conifers have no place in the household waste bin. If they are collected in the black bins, they end up at the Haganis incineration plant. Of course, burning garbage can power the district heating network. But burning a fir tree, which can contain up to 45% water if it has been recently felled, requires much more energy than that of household waste.

Compost or shredded material for green spaces

Better to enhance your Christmas tree. The Métropole de Metz recalls that it transforms them into compost which will be used as a natural fertilizer or into ground material which will be used to mulch municipal green spaces.

Two solutions are proposed for getting rid of your tree. The tree can be transported to municipal recycling centers where they will be recycled. It can also be dropped off at one of the drop-off locations defined in 43 municipalities in the Metz metropolis. “Residents are invited to leave their natural tree without decoration or tree bag,” remind the services.

Collection points

In Metz, 10 collection points will be set up at the same location as the points of sale from January 2 to 26, 2025: place Durutte; avenue André-Malraux; 5 rue du Moulin; Place Saint-Fiacre, Place Maud'huy, Quai Félix-Maréchal, Place Coislin, Place Saint-Livier, Rue Jean-Burger and Boulevard de Trèves.

Finally, residents who cannot travel will be able to place their tree at the curb throughout the month of January, during household waste collection times and days. They will also be valued. Please note: fir trees must not exceed 1.20 meters.
