Mérignac comes close to the feat in the Coupe de France! This Friday evening, in a melting Robert Brettes stadium in Mérignac, SAM was only eliminated on penalties by Stade Lavallois in the 32nd final of the Coupe de France (0–0, 3–4 tab).
The Mérignacais believed in it until the end after a heroic match against a Mayenne team which nevertheless plays in Ligue 2. The difference in level between the Girondin amateurs, residents of R1, the 6th division of French football, and the professionals of Stade Lavallois was not felt during the 95 minutes. SAM managed to hold the match 0-0 before giving in to penalties.
A scenario which inevitably leaves some regrets for Clément Tapy, the coach of Mérignac: “There is a bit of it and besides, it raises the performance of my players even higher. Frankly, I would have signed to have regrets before the match because it can also go much worse. For example, if you score a goal quickly, it can be a long time coming. So, having regrets is magnificent compared to what we produced. Afterwards, obviously, when we get to the penalty shootout, we say to ourselves. we were really very close and it doesn't matter a lot.”
“We had incredible moments”
Despite the elimination, the players experienced something very strong like the young defender, François Roumegoux: “It was exceptional to play in front of all this audience (4,000 spectators). We tried not to foil too much but I think we can come out with our heads held high. The conditions were really very complicated. We are obviously disgusted there at hot, but it's still exceptional Despite the disappointment, we remain very happy with our journey.”
It was the first time in its history that the SAM reached this level. Clément Tapy, the Mérignac coach, therefore only remembers the positive: “Frankly, what we have just experienced is not our daily life! The stadium was full, the emotions were inevitably heightened. We had incredible moments. We pushed our limits. I hope that all is well serve us and our group has really grown in this adventure.”
