Robin Mirisola opened the scoring for Jong Genk. Two minutes later, Corenthyn Lavie balanced the plates again. The same Lavie was able to give Francs Borains the lead from the spot after a handball from Yoshinaga, but goalkeeper Mike Penders chose the right angle. “With a penalty it is always a mental game,” laughed Penders. “I was in a good place.” On the half hour, Cédric Nuozzi curled ahead of the visitors again.

Immediately after the break, Nuozzi saw his kick hit the crossbar. On the other side, an attempt by Lavie met the same fate. Here too there was a sleeper in the way. Jong Genk seemed to be on their way to victory, but fifteen minutes before the end, defender Dorian Dessoleil fired a free kick into the intersection. “I still had one hand, but I could no longer keep the ball out of the goal,” sighed Penders. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

“We were in control of the game in the first half,” Penders said. “Francs Borains was lurking on the counter. In the second half we had a more difficult time and they pressed more. We could have won the match, but after the 2-2 we also held out.”

Coach Thomas Buffel was not dissatisfied with the draw. “We didn't lose and kept the gap with Francs Borains achievable. We were pumping in the second half. The change made some boys nervous, but they still held on. The boys now get a deserved break.” On January 3, the young Genkies will gather again at the academy.
