François Bayrou surprised (and annoyed) more than one this Monday, December 16, by arriving at the Pau municipal council. Appointed Prime Minister on December 13, the president of MoDem insisted on retaining his position as mayor, which he has held for more than ten years, despite the difficulty of the task that awaits him at the top of the State. Aware of the questions raised by the combination of his two functions, the tenant of Matignon quickly defused the situation: “I forgot to say earlier that I will remain mayor on a voluntary basis, I will not receive any compensation”reports a journalist from Paris Match present at the municipal council on X.
By remaining mayor of Pau, François Bayrou will only receive his salary as Prime Minister. Framed by decree n°2012-938 of August 23, 2012 having reduced the salaries of members of the government by 30%, his remuneration will amount to 12,457 euros. A sum to which must be added 373 euros of residence allowance, as well as 3,207 euros of official allowance, for a gross monthly salary equal to that of Emmanuel Macron, of 16,038 euros.

François Bayrou heckled in Pau for his absence in Mayotte
Despite this welcome clarification, François Bayrou still had to face criticism from many elected officials regarding his presence in Pau. And for good reason: this Saturday, December 14, Cyclone Chido devastated Mamoudzou, in Mayotte, where around twenty people lost their lives. Instead of going there, the Prime Minister shocked several deputies and municipal councilors by preferring to focus on the much less urgent issues of the city of which he is the councilor.
Tunday Cilgi, elected from the Democratic and Social Left in Pau, notably questioned the successor of Michel Barnier on his choice. “What are you doing here?” You are not in your place »we hear him say, in a sequence shared by TF1 journalist Paul Larrouturou on X. “You are out of place, Mr. Bayrou. I consider the fact that you came here to be a political mistake. Your first mission, Mr. Prime Minister, is to take the plane and go to Mayotte”he added.
To defend himself, François Bayrou insisted on the presence of the resigning Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, on site. During the question session to the government at the National Assembly, this Tuesday, December 17, he responded to the leader of the Insoumis, Mathilde Panot. “We do not have the right to separate the province from the circles [parisiens]. If I had been in a town hall in the 7th arrondissement or the town hall of Neuilly, you would have considered it to be very good”he regretted, relates Liberation .
