Austrian tycoon – arrest warrant issued against René Benko in Italy – News
  • The Trent public prosecutor’s office has apparently issued an arrest warrant against René Benko, the founder of the insolvent real estate group Signa.
  • Other people were arrested, including the Bolzano economic consultant Heinz Peter Hager.
  • The investigation involves suspected credit fraud.

Specifically, Benko is suspected of having faked the solvency of his already insolvent Signa Group so that banks could extend their loans. The responsible public prosecutor’s office announced that investigations were now underway against Benko, against another person and against a subsidiary of the Signa Group.

However, Benko’s Austrian lawyer Norbert Wess does not assume that a European arrest warrant will be executed against Benko. The lawyer did not comment on the reasons for this assessment. “Mr Benko will continue to cooperate fully with all national and international authorities, as he has done so far, and is confident that any allegations against him can be clarified as incorrect,” Wess wrote to the German Press Agency.

Legend:

The Austrian entrepreneur Benko had built up a large portfolio with his Signa Group. According to the insolvency administrator, the total claims against Benko add up to around 2.4 billion euros.
