And engagement more for preserve and restore the Sèves peat bog, better known as the Baupte peat bog (Manche).
Faced with the challenges linked to climate change, and with the prospect of stopping the industrial exploitation of peat and pumping in 2026, this peat bog, located in the heart of the Cotentin Regional Natural Parkis in the process of reconversion.
A low carbon strategy
Peatlands in France represent approximately 0.2% of the national surface area but contain 5% of soil carbon. Those of the Marais du Bessin and Cotentin are among the five most important lowland peat bogs in the country.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition therefore wishes to integrate them in the “National Low Carbon Strategy”with the creation of a “Low Carbon Label” method for the restoration of these environments. However, the specificities of the regulated Cotentin Marshes require adaptations in the existing methodology.
A flow tower to measure CO2 emissions
Thus, a partnership between EDF and the Marais Regional Park of Cotentin was sign during the Show of Mayors and Local Authorities, from November 19 to 21, 2024 in Paris.
This project involves the installation of a flow tower. This tool will allow measure CO emissions in real time2 peatlands and follow the evolution of these fragile environments.
Peatlands are essential to the sequestration of carbone and to the regulation of the cycle of l’eauplaying a crucial role in biodiversity and water resources management.
A research program
This partnership includes a research program which will be carried out with the University of Rennes and the Brière Regional Natural Park (Pays de la Loire). It will be dedicated in particular to assessing the carbon sequestration potential of the Cotentin and Bessin marshes, and to adapting the Low Carbon Label method to regulated marsh peatlands.
