Weather: cold, showers and snow in the mountains at low altitude next weekend due to the polar vortex stalling

Weather change on the horizon. After a sunny weekend in Occitania, several rainy disturbances will circulate across France this week, interspersed by short lulls. On Wednesday, the wind will blow strongly from the south of Brittany to the Atlantic coast with gusts of up to 90 km/h at the seaside. On Wednesday, the weather will become cooler and temperatures will once again fall below normal for season. Snow will return to the mountains this week.

At the end of the week, choppy weather is expected due to the polar vortex stalling. Saturday December 7, three quarters of France will be under the rain, and a fairly strong wind, coming from the British Isles. The wind will blow at more than 100 km/h on the Channel coast. Only the southeastern quarter of the country would remain safe. Temperatures will be between 4°C and 9°C in the morning, from 7°C to 12°C in the afternoon in general and up to 15°C on the Côte d'Azur, according to La Chaîne Météo.

Sunday December 8, temperatures will cool down. The weather will remain threatening. In the mountains, the rain-snow limit will drop between 500 m and 900 m depending on the mountain range. At the rear, showers are not excluded. The wind coming from the North will be noticeable. Around the Mediterranean, the mistral and the tramontane will blow violently. Temperatures will be between 0°C and 5°C in the morning and 3°C to 10°C in the afternoon.

These forecasts indicate that snow will return to the mountains even if the amount of snow expected is not yet precisely known. Good news for ski resorts which plan to open next weekend, the following or the weekend before Christmas.
