The comedian was invited to the set of “Quotidien” and was able to discover for the first time the images of his interview orchestrated between the man of the Church, his mother and himself.

“Since the last time, something quite incredible has happened”said Yann Barthès to his evening guest, Manu Payet . The comedian was a guest, this Monday, November 25, on the show “Quotidien” on the occasion of the extension of his tour. Initially scheduled until May 10, 2024, his show “Emmanuel 2” was so successful that he is now tackling the Zénith, starting in January 2025.

If the comedian had already gone to the set of the talk show to promote this same one-man show in 2023, he is now no longer the same man as Yann Barthès pointed out. “He met the Pope, with his mother, last June.” And while the presenter shows the image of Manu Payet, slicked back hair and tie tied around his neck, approaching Pope Francis to shake his hand, the comedian lets out a cry of surprise and raises his hand to his mouth in astonishment. “But she’s my mother.”he says, referring to the woman in the hat who is standing next to him in the video. “And it’s the Pope above all”tries to refocus Yann Barthès. “My mother is in black huh”specifies the comedian while turning towards the audience.

“For once you have a good idea”

“It’s so fun to show that. Rolala, that makes me weird”shares Manu Payet before adding: “My mother is already a catechist, she teaches catechism so my mother is a senior. She goes up there, she walks past everyone.” And despite frequent self-deprecation, the forty-year-old was particularly stressed by this meeting initiated by the man of the Church. “He invited lots of comedians from all over the world to tell us that we had to continue to make people laugh.” Alongside the Frenchy, the American Jimmy Fallon and Whoopi Goldberg.

For this event, Manu Payet invited his mother who came from Island for the occasion. And as a symbol, he had the idea of giving her a framed map of the island. “We were at the airport in Reunion the day before and I passed the souvenir shop. I see the little embossed maps of Reunion, like at school, with 17 balls. I made an expense report to the Vatican.” He then proposed the idea of bringing one back to his mother for their guest the next day. And this idea to trigger in her “an expression that[il] didn’t know him: pride.” “Right before I gave it to him, I freaked out. And my mother said to me: “there is a symbolism if you are the one doing it. You had a good idea, for once you have one, give it to him!”»

Six months after this meeting, the comedian still can't believe it. “I’m so happy to see this picture. I didn't even dare to post it on my networks because it was so unreal to experience this moment.” he shares moved before taking a lighter tone: “Next to Jimmy Fallon who was chewing gum when he entered the room for a little fun fact.”
