Putin has threatened Western countries that provide military support to Kiev with countermeasures. Britain has declared its combat readiness, according to a senior military official.
London / Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin has openly threatened retaliatory measures against countries that allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russian territory. He made it clear: “In the event of an escalation of aggressive actions, we will act resolutely in a mirror image.” He justified this threat with the use of Western weapons on Russian soil, which he sees as provoked by the USA and other nations. Putin noted: “The regional conflict in Ukraine provoked by the West has acquired elements of a global character.”
Britain, in particular, found itself in the Kremlin’s crosshairs after Putin bluntly threatened an attack if British weapons were used to attack Russian territory. Lieutenant General Sir Rob Magowan responded with a clear message: “If the British Army were asked to fight tonight, they would fight tonight,” said the senior military officer.
North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia – USA approves Atacms missiles for Ukraine
Magowan made the comments to a British Parliament select committee this week, warning of the seriousness of the situation. Shortly before, US President Joe Biden had approved Ukraine’s use of American Atacms missiles with a range of 300 kilometers. This decision is a response to Russia’s “escalation,” said Biden. According to media reports, around 10,000 North Korean soldiers are now fighting in the Russian Kursk region alongside around 40,000 Russian troops to push back the Ukrainian armed forces.
For a long time there was agreement in the United States and Europe not to allow Ukraine to attack deep into Russian territory in order to prevent NATO from becoming directly involved in the war. But recent developments increase the risk of global escalation. Mikhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, interprets Putin’s latest threats as an expression of “absolute fear.” Putin is trying to intimidate the West, Podoljak said Bild. “Putin only wants to end the war on his terms so as not to be held responsible for war crimes.”
Putin warns of global escalation: threats following the use of Western missiles
In a speech to the nation on Thursday, Putin said the Ukraine conflict had taken on “elements of a global character” through the use of long-range Western missiles against targets in Russia. He threatened retaliation against countries whose missiles were fired into Russian territory. Due to Russia’s use of a new medium-range missile in the war against Ukraine, representatives from NATO and Kiev will meet for talks in Brussels on Tuesday. Like the news agency AFP learned from diplomatic circles on Friday that the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, which was called at short notice, will take place at ambassadorial level.
The meeting was called by Kiev after Thursday’s Russian attack on the city of Dnipro, according to reports. According to its President Vladimir Putin, Russia used a new type of missile for the first time in this attack.
Putin said in a televised address on Thursday evening that Russia had “tested one of the newest Russian medium-range missile systems in combat conditions.” It is an experimental “hypersonic” rocket. This type of rocket can also be equipped with nuclear warheads, said the Kremlin boss. (jal/dpa/afp)
