TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo man has a warning for others after dodging a potential scam. He said it involves two people, one of them calling and posing as a public defender asking for money and the other, as one of his family members.

Dereck Patton said the call he got on Monday, was a first.

“There were like red flags all over the place,” Patton said.

Patton said the first call, was a man claiming to be his son needing help. The caller said he had been in a crash and was facing jail time.

The only problem is that Patton said his actual son is only 12 years old.

The scammer then referred Patton to a public defender named “Adam Wise” to discuss dismissing the “case.”

Patton said the pretend public defender asked him for $6,000 to get his son’s case dismissed. Patton didn’t fall for it.

“Well I’m thinking, that’s just not how bonds work,” Patton said.

13 Action News reached out to the public defender’s office through Toledo Municipal Court and learned that an “Adam Wise” doesn’t work there.

The Toledo Police Department said this sounds like a scam, but isn’t aware of any similar incidents in the area.

TPD suggests verifying who you’re talking to online or over the phone. If you suspect someone is scamming you, try to record it.

“Yeah, I’m glad I’m having an opportunity to share the story with you guys, so you can share it with everybody else,” Patton said.
