Noted for his short films, Alexis Langlois signs a first feature film in which he asserts his universe. Presented at Critics’ Week in Cannes, Drama Queens releases in theaters on November 27, 2024.
While she climbs the steps of fame, singer Mimi Madamour (Louiza Aura) hides from her mother, but also from her fans, her love for Billie Kohler (Gio Ventura), a punk musician who performs on underground scenes . This notoriety ends up distancing Mimi from her lover, a tormented soul who will never recover from this abandonment.
The revelation to the whole world of this affair ends up getting the better of Mimi's career. Fifty years later, in 2055, the YouTuber Steevyshady (Bilal Hassani), blonde wig and botoxed face, tells this whole story in whose shadow he has lived his whole life, also secretly in love with Mimi Madamour.
Inspired by the cinema of John Waters and his favorite actress Divine, fan of the television series Buffy and Britney Spears, but also a lover of classic American cinema, Alexis Langlois delivers a film with hybrid influences, part of pop culture and integrating markers of the queer universe.
Saturated colors, frenzied rhythm, acidulous sets and costumes… Kitsch and excess are the key words of this film which does not give the viewer a second of respite.
Alexis Langlois takes an ironic look at the world of entertainment and questions us about the presentation of the body, in a society where influencers, show business and YouTubers of all kinds have taken power. But in the end, it is love that triumphs.
Because behind this ultra-pop staging like fireworks, it is a classic story of tormented, incandescent and romantic love passion, unfolding over half a century, that Alexis Langlois' film tells.
