NARRATIVE – Republican senators pushed Donald Trump to abandon Matt Gaetz's controversial Justice Department nomination, choosing instead former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, another loyalist, but significantly less scandalous.
Donald Trump has given up on imposing Matt Gaetz as attorney general. Shortly after he declared on Thursday that he was abandoning his candidacy, explaining that it was « become a distraction from the crucial work of transition »the future president announced the appointment of Pam Bondi.
A former attorney general of Florida, she is another longtime ally of Trump, whom she defended during his impeachment by Congress and supported during his multiple indictments. Much more experienced in matters of justice, she is not surrounded by the scandals which had made Gaetz's appointment a primary source of tension between the future president and the next Republican majority in the Senate.
