NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Severe winter weather has led to significant road closures across Northern California, affecting major highways and state routes.
According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), northbound Interstate 5 is closed to all vehicles and trucks at Fawndale, located 10 miles north of Redding. Southbound Interstate 5 is also closed at Edgewood, approximately 21 miles south of Yreka.
As of 11 a.m., State Route 3 is now open at Scott Mountain just north of Callahan, after trees were blocking the roadway. The route is also blocked south of Douglas City because of winter weather conditions and multiple trees obstructing the road.
As of 10:39 a.m., State Route 299 is clear, at Hillcrest, after multiple big rigs were blocking the roadway. The route is blocked at Hat Creek Grade due to winter weather and several spun-out vehicles. Additionally, as of 11:22 a.m., State Route 299 is open, just east of Buckhorn Summit, following a closure for a spun-out big rig. Multiple vehicles have spun out in Round Mountain, causing further blockages.
All southbound lanes of U.S. 97 are closed just south of Macdoel due to snow.
According to the California Highway Patrol, as of 11:10 a.m., U.S. 395 North is temporarily closed south of Lambert Lane near Standish due to down power lines.
Authorities have not provided an estimated time for when these roadways will reopen.
