Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a thriller inspired by a real news story.
If José Garcia is used to comic roles, he is also astonishing when he slips into the shoes of a man accused of the murder of his wife. This is particularly the case in Le Torrent, a thriller by Anne Le Ny.
Released in 2022, this thriller-based drama follows the tragic fate of Alexander (Jose Garcia), a husband and father who discovers that his wife, Juliette (Ophélie Kolb), is cheating on him. After a violent argument, the young woman fled into the night and fell to her death. The day after the tragedy, the gendarmerie begins an investigation and Patrick (André Dussollier), Juliette's father, arrives, ready to do anything to discover the truth.
Alexandre, who fears being accused, persuades Lison, his daughter from a first marriage (Capucine Valmary), to cover for him. He sinks deeper and deeper into lies and Patrick begins to suspect him. As if trapped between the two men, young Lison could change everything. This is the start of a terrible cycle…
José Garcia creates a surprise
This year, Jose Garcia played the husband ready to do anything to win back his wife in the film Nous, les Leroy by Florent Bernard, a jovial character the polar opposite of the one he plays in this noir thriller.
And This is Le Ny set her sights on Antoine de Caunes' faithful sidekick in Nowhere Else, it's because she absolutely wanted a “actor who comes from comedy”.
When the film was released in cinemas The Torrentshe notably declared: “I knew his dramatic abilities having seen him in The Cleaver of Costa-Gravas”, then added: “Shis clear and sympathetic side assured me that the spectators would feel no ambiguity in the character.”
To bring this scenario to life, This is Le Ny was inspired by the Suzanne Viguier affair, which had a great impact on her in the early 2000s. As a reminder, this is a news item in which a man accused of the disappearance of his wife is supported by his children: “It took me a while to write, and I thought a lot about finding the young girl’s place.”
The director also explained: “Adopting the father's side was complicated and I took that of a daughter who has no place with her father and who may feel the unconscious desire to see her stepmother disappear.
Just like Jose Garciathe performance of Capucine Valmary (notably known for her role as Diane Mathure, in the series OVNI(s)) is very convincing. A well-crafted little thriller, with quality acting, just the way we like it!
