As a deep depression has passed over the south of the British Isles in recent hours, wind gusts have accelerated considerably in France. In fact, they locally exceeded 130 km/h on the Vosges ridges. and 120 km/h in Corsica.

These strong gusts of wind will continue over the next few hours under the cold front which continues to slide towards the south of France. The wind will also strengthen further towards Corsica, where gusts of up to nearly 200 km/h could hit Cape Corsica in the coming hours. Météo-France has also placed Corsica on alert.

Very strong gusts of wind

Very strong gusts of wind have already occurred over the last few hours in France, while a very rainy cold front crossed the northern regions of the country.

Among the most powerful gusts, we note:

  • 136 km/h at Markstein in the Vosges,
  • 114 km/h in Fécamp in Seine-Maritime,
  • 111 km/h at the top of the Eiffel Tower,
  • 106 km/h in Boulogne-sur-Mer in Pas-de-.

The wind gusts will further accelerate over the next few hours, particularly towards Corsica.

Although orange vigilance does not begin until tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. in Corsica, the wind will quickly strengthen this evening towards the Isle of Beauty, with gusts exceeding 100 to 120 km/h.

Météo-France has therefore placed Corsica on orange alert this afternoon due to the violent gusts of wind expected tomorrow on the island. The event will start at 8 a.m. and end in the evening, probably around 8 p.m. according to the indications published on the Météo-France website.

In its vigilance bulletin, Météo-France specifies that the Libeccio will strongly strengthen tomorrow over Corsica. The wind will blow very strongly throughout the day, before easing in the evening.

From tomorrow morning, wind gusts could reach 110 to 130 km/h in the Bastia region. In Balagne and on the Corsican terrain, they could oscillate between 120 and 150 km/h, with locally slightly higher peaks on the summits.

Finally, at Cap Corse, gusts could approach 160 to 180 km/h, or occasionally reach 200 km/h.

Lull then?

A calm is expected in Corsica tomorrow evening and during a good part of the day Thursday, before a resumption of stormy weather conditions from Thursday evening, with the approach of a new depression.
