Berlin is known for its well-developed local public transport (ÖPNV). Almost around the clock, you can get anywhere in a very short time using the BVG and S-Bahn Berlin transport services.
When it was announced last year that there would be a monthly ticket for just 29 euros, there was a huge rush. But now there is bad news for the passengers!
BVG and S-Bahn Berlin: Passengers are hit hard
The 29-euro ticket for the BVG and S-Bahn Berlin was one of the SPD’s biggest election promises, which the black-red Berlin Senate ultimately implemented. Since then it has become an integral part of the lives of many Berliners. 200,000 users are already using the cheap ticket. A bargain when you consider that you previously had to fork out hundreds of euros for comparable tickets.

On Monday (November 18th), politicians provided sad certainty. According to an RBB report, the leaders of the CDU and SPD agreed to end the 29-euro ticket. It will therefore be deleted without replacement. It was only introduced in July. Bad news for many passengers who travel every day with the BVG and S-Bahn in Berlin. It is not yet known when the ticket will no longer be available.
The social ticket is also becoming more expensive
But that’s not enough. The 9 euro social ticket, for people who are entitled to housing benefit, citizen’s benefit, basic security and asylum assistance, will rise to 19 euros per month – more than doubling the price. The CDU allegedly even wanted to raise the price to 29 euros. Here the SPD was apparently able to put a brake on the talks. Over 500,000 public transport users are affected by the price increase.
We have put together further news for you today:
The reason for the massive price increases at BVG and S-Bahn Berlin are significant cost-cutting measures. Berlin has to cut 3 billion euros from its budget or raise it through increases. Financial experts have already managed 2.7 billion.
