During the Nations League match between the Netherlands and Hungary, Adam Szalai, a staff member of the visitors, became unwell during the match. Szalai received first aid on the sidelines and was then taken away amid loud applause. Not much later, the Hungarian Football Association came with reassuring news: “Adam is conscious, his condition is stable.”
Commotion in minute 8 in the Johan Cruijf Arena. Adam Szalai, staff member of the Hungarian national team, suddenly fell. It immediately became clear that the situation is serious. The man needs to be resuscitated. Meanwhile, a white banner also appears to cover the situation as best as possible. After a few minutes of delay, there was loud applause in the stadium as Szalai was carried in on a stretcher. Not much later, the Hungarian Football Association shared the reassuring news that Szalai is stable and conscious. He was taken to a hospital in Amsterdam for further examinations.
For a moment there was doubt whether the Hungarians wanted to continue playing, but after a thumbs-up from captain Szoboszlai, the game continued. Or how football can simply be turned into a side issue.
Wout Weghorst the schlemiel after ostentatious cheering
A very unusual situation. And not much later a striking moment also took place on a sporting level. Before the referee can whistle the match again, he is called to the screen by the VAR for alleged handball by the Hungarians in their own goal area. That happened just before the staff member collapsed. As if the situation wasn’t dire enough for the visitors, they conceded a penalty. The Dutch striker Wout Weghorst converted it flawlessly, but celebrated very ostentatiously given the tragedy that had just occurred.
