The match between the Netherlands and Hungary was interrupted from the 8th minute. The cause: the discomfort of a member of the Hungarian staff, who had to be resuscitated and evacuated on a stretcher.

These are images that we would like to never see, and yet which seem to be becoming more and more frequent in football. This Saturday evening, in the 8th minute of Netherlands – Hungary, the match had to be stopped for around ten minutes due to discomfort within the Hungarian staff.

A member of Marco Rossi’s staff actually collapsed, suffering from convulsions and visibly feeling quite serious. The medical team quickly intervened, the rest of the staff forming a human barrier while a white sheet came to hide the staff member from the eyes of the cameras and the public.

Under the applause of the Johan Cruyff ArenA in Amsterdam, the Hungarian staff member was evacuated on a stretcher, visibly out of danger. The Hungarian team then decided to continue the match, as Dominik Szoboszlai confirmed with a thumbs up.

Irony of fate: the match resumed… with a penalty in favor of the Netherlands, the match having previously been stopped for consultation of a hand fault in the Hungarian rectangle. A penalty which will be transformed by Wout Weghorst… who will celebrate this goal in a slightly too demonstrative manner given the situation.

These images of course resonate even more in Belgium, a week after the cardiac incident experienced by Noah Fadiga during the meeting between La Gantoise and Standard de Liège. The Buffalo has since had a defibrillator implanted and should be able to resume his career. We also wish the Hungarian staff member the best.
