Do we really sleep less well on full moon nights? The “True or False” team looked into the question.
The full moon has been the source of several myths for centuries. One of the best known is that it disturbs our sleep. “I feel like I'm sleeping less well, more excited, more awake“, assures a man. Many scientists have tried to verify this popular belief. One of the latest studies was carried out in 2021, by a group of American and Argentinian researchers.
They observed several communities, from large cities to isolated areas of Argentina. They conclude that people go to bed later as the full moon approaches, and sleep less. According to them, the cause is lunar light, which disrupts the internal clock, which regulates sleep cycles. The results should, however, be taken with a grain of salt, according to the French Association for Scientific Information. To find out more, the “True or False” team met a neurologist.
