On the website on which the Permanent Electoral Authority published the results in real time, Georgescu reached the percentage of 22% after counting the votes in 80% of the precincts and surpassed the PSD candidate. At that moment, journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu wrote on his Facebook account a message of only 14 words, which quickly became viral.
“On the evening of November 24, 2024, the invasion of Romania by Russia began,” wrote CTP, in 50 minutes, the message had been viewed 7,000 times and had gathered 1,125 comments and almost 1,000 shares.
The first estimates of the results of the 1st round of the presidential election were announced at 21:00, when the polls closed, but they do not include voters from the Diaspora. According to the CURS survey, presented by Digi 24 television, Marcel Ciolacu obtained 25%, Elena Lasconi-18.1%, Călin Georgescu-16% and George Simion-14.6%.
The official results that the BEC started to update on the official website would, however, overturn the exit polls. Călin Georgescu is the big surprise of the elections and at 00:30 on Monday, after counting the votes from 17,875 polling stations, out of a total of 20,059, he was leading with 1,635,653 received, a percentage of 21.98%.
