The coast of Valencia and the Malaga region have been placed on red alert by the Spanish meteorological agency for this Thursday. “River overflows and flooding may occur,” forecasters estimate.

For more than two weeks, Spain has been affected by deadly floods which have caused the death of at least 223 people, the vast majority in the Valencia region. According to the latest report, 216 people have died in this region and 16 remain missing.

A red alert has been issued for this territory for the day of Thursday, November 14, by AEMET, the Spanish meteorological service. The latter warn of an “extreme danger”. “Avoid travel. Rivers may overflow and flood,” warns weather forecasters. The Malaga region, in Andalusia, has also been placed on red alert. Other localities in Andalusia are under orange alert for the risk of rain, floods and storms.

Classes suspended at the University of Valencia

“Cumulative precipitation in 12 hours: 180 liters per square meter. These accumulations will be more likely in coastal areas and could accumulate within approximately 4 or 5 hours” indicates AEMET on its X account.

The president of the Valencian community Carlos Mazon announced “the suspension of educational and sporting activities and the closure of day centers”. The local elected official also issued “traffic restrictions”, explaining that movements should only be “urgent and duly justified”.

Faced with this red vigilance, the University of Valencia has decided to suspend face-to-face classes for this Thursday, “taking into account the current weather situation, the declared emergency levels, as well as the measures adopted by different public administrations”.

In recent hours, several regions of Spain have experienced significant rainfall. The Malaga region, also placed on red alert, is also particularly affected, which has led local authorities to take several measures such as travel restrictions or the closure of schools. According to our colleagues from El Pais, many flights from Malaga airport have been canceled.

The Guardia Civil is carrying out several operations this evening in order to “help and warn the inhabitants of the municipalities which could be affected” by the floods.

The authorities of the province of Seville also took several measuresin particular the suspension of activities in numerous “educational centers”.
