Novak Djokovic had another strong year on the ATP Tour despite not winning a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2017.
At 37-years-old Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam winner and the record holder for weeks as world number one.
2024 started with a shock defeat for the Serb, as Djokovic was knocked out of the Australian Open by eventual champion Jannik Sinner.
He then reached his only Major final of the year on grass, as Alcaraz beat Djokovic in straight sets to take home the Wimbledon title.
Djokovic got revenge on Alcaraz by winning Olympic gold in Paris soon after however, finally winning the one title that had eluded him in his career to date.
His performances in 2024 were enough to secure him qualification to this year’s ATP Finals in Turin.
However, Djokovic decided to withdraw from the ATP Finals earlier this week due to an ongoing injury, instead aiming to return to the court in Australia next year,
A decision that Serena Williams’ former coach is a big fan of.
Rick Macci says that Novak Djokovic’s new schedule is ‘brilliant’
At the age of 37, Djokovic has made the decision to play a lighter schedule, focusing more on the four Grand Slam tournaments rather than playing tournaments such as the ATP Finals.
Serena Williams’ former coach Rick Macci has taken to twitter to praise the Serb for the decision to adapt his schedule.
“It’s the Jokers [Djokovic’s] decision to not play many tournaments and it’s the right thing to do,” he said.
“This smart surgical approach is extending his career.
“His approach is brilliant.”
The former coach went on to explain that Djokovic’s understanding of his body will help him to future Major success.
“The rubber band man knows his mind and body,” said Macci.
“He thinks there are a few more Slams on the horizon.”
Has Novak Djokovic won his last Grand Slam?
Djokovic’s success at the 2023 US Open was his 24th Major title and his third of the year.
No-one would’ve predicted that his most recent title at Flushing Meadows would be the last of his career, but a year later, some may just be starting to think that the Serb has won his last Grand Slam title.
At 37-years-old there is no doubt that the Serb is approaching the end of his career, but it’s impossible to say whether or not he can pick up another big trophy before it’s all said and done.
But has anyone won a Grand Slam at Djokovic’s age?
Age | Name | Grand Slam |
36 years, six days | Novak Djokovic | 2023 French Open |
36 years, three months | Novak Djokovic | 2023 US Open |
36 years, four months | Ken Rosewall | 1971 Australian Open |
36 years, five months | Roger Federer | 2018 Australian Open |
37 years, one month | Ken Rosewall | 1972 Australian Open |
The quick answer is no. Djokovic already holds the record for two of the top five oldest Major triumphs, and no-one has won at an age older than he is now.
When he turns up in Melbourne next year, Djokovic will be just a few months shy of 38, an age where picking up another Grand Slam would be truly remarkable.
Truly remarkable things come quite easily to the Serb however, so you wouldn’t be surprised to see him add at least one more trophy to his collection before the end of his career.
The 2025 Australian Open is set to begin on January 12.
