Municipal elections in Mons: the PTB in power for the first time in Wallonia? A PS-PTB-Ecolo coalition is taking shape

Will the PTB enter into a municipal majority in Mons? According to our information, the coming to power of the radical left in the city of Doudou is very probable. A majority agreement is on the table between La Liste du Bourgmestre, led by the socialist Nicolas Martin, Ecolo and the PTB. It has, in fact, been several days since Nicolas Martin (PS), Charlotte de Jaer (Ecolo) and Céline De Bruyn (PTB) negotiate. The agreement must be validated this Thursday evening at 8 p.m., by the party authorities, made up of activists.

If this agreement is confirmed, it would be the first time that the PTB enters a municipal majority in French-speaking Belgium.

On the evening of October 13, at the end of the municipal election, the Mayor’s List, led by the socialist and outgoing mayor Nicolas Martin, came first, winning 22 of the 45 seats on the municipal council, one seat short of a majority. absolute.

No choice, therefore, for Nicolas Martin to form a coalition. But with whom? With Mons en Mieux by Georges-Louis Bouchez, the list came second? Unlikely, given the strong tensions between Nicolas Martin and Georges-Louis Bouchez during the campaign. Another option: renew the majority La Liste du Bourgmestre-ECOLO. But it would only ensure two additional seats, and therefore a relatively short majority.

A tripartite would thus be favored by Nicolas Martin. The outgoing mayor first opened discussions with Les Engagés who seem to have ruled out entering the majority. Ultimately, it is a coalition bringing together the entire spectrum of the left that would be favored: The Bourgmestre-Ecolo-PTB List.
