CRITIQUE – The choreographer seems to have found himself with this piece where he choreographs songs by Jeff Buckley. It was created this Tuesday evening at the Seine Musical and should have a great career.
Hats off to Mr. Millepied! It's light, it's danceable, it's gripping and it lasts 2h45. What are we talking about? Of Gracethe latest opus by the choreographer trained at New York City Ballet and dedicated to Jeff Buckley. An itinerary in 23 songs and two acts where Millepied combines theater, video, music and twelve dancers. Clearly, the dance exudes this freedom which inspired the gestures from the United States. It also exudes a musicality of moods and atmospheres characteristic of Jerome Robbins, Millepied's master and mentor. Certainly, Grace is not West Side Story. But the piece could find its place on Broadway, alongside compositions by Twyla Tharp for example. Except that it flourishes on the vast stage of the Seine Musicale, with excellent sound, much better than in the vintage theaters of 5th avenue.
