REPORTAGE – The Goncourt prize was awarded to Kamel Daoud for “Houris” and the Renaudot prize to “Jacaranda” by Gaël Faye. Two novels set against the backdrop of civil war in Algeria and Rwanda.
In front of the Drouant restaurant, men in red “police” armbands slowly take over the street. Curious. There was none in previous years. The name of Kamel Daoud comes up on everyone's lips. Should we see a sign there? It must be said that the presence of the author and his publishing house Gallimard was banned at the Algiers International Book Fair because of his criticism of Algerian power. But we'll come back to that. For the moment, some think that the writer's political positions would be too daring for a jury which does not like controversy.
