Tour of Lombardy: simply too strong, world champion Tadej Pogacar makes a little more cycling history

Does he come from another planet? Tadej Pogacar, already written in the history of his sport as a living legend, continues to amaze the world of road . The world champion, ultra-favorite on this 118e edition of the Tour of Lombardy, of which he is the three-time title holder, nailed the competition to fly, alone, like a boss, to Como and a fourth title.

To find a trace of such domination on the Italian Monument, you have to go back to the 1940s, a time when a certain Fausto Coppi, also one of the biggest names in cycling, splashed his country with his talent (winner from 1946 to 1949).

Another successful solo raid

The Slovenian attacked where everyone knew he was going to try, in the Sormano pass (12.9 km at 6.4%), just under 50 km from the line. And no one, not even the valiant Remco Evenepoel (finally 2eat 3’16), was unable to take his wheel. Enough to succeed, after the Worlds (100 km), the White Roads (81 km) or more recently the Tour d’Émilie (37 km), a new solo rush to achieve yet another prestigious career success.

The Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-TRek) completes the podium behind “Pogi” and Evenepoel, after getting rid of the Spaniards Ion Izagirre and Enric Mas. On the Tricolores side, Pavel Sivakov finished best Frenchman (6eat 4’34) while David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) grabs the Top 10 (9e) at 4’58. Or light years away from the rainbow jersey which, at 26, continues to fill the trophy cabinet and the pages of history books.

7 At 26, Tadej Pogacar has just won son 7e Monument in career (four times the Tour of Lombardy, twice Liège-Bastogne-Liège, once the Tour of Flanders), enough to be now the seventh cyclist with the most Monuments in his career – tied with Fabian Cancellara, Tom Boonen and Gino Bartali.

The final classification of the Tour of Lombardy

1. Pogacar (UAE Emirates, SVN) the 255 km in 6 h 04’58; 2. Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step, BEL) at 3’16; 3. Ciccone (Lidl-Trek, ITA) at 4’31; 4. Izagirre (Cofidis, ESP) at 4’34; 5. Mas (Movistar, ESP) mt ; 6. Pavel Sivakov (UAE Emirates, FRA) mt… 9. Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ, FRA) at 4’58.
