As part of the completion of the social assistance project, and with a view to better targeting of the categories concerned, the government has just announced the operationalization of the reform of the Butane Gas price compensation system.

A press release from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance specifies that from Monday May 20, 2024, the price of the 12 kg gas cylinder will be increased by 10 DH, thus rising to 50 DH and that of 3 kg will see its price increased by 2.50 DH.

The text specifies in this regard that “as part of the implementation of the direct social assistance program (3.6 million families benefited from it until last April), based on the principle of the most effective targeting of families deserving of support through the Unified Social Register (RSU), and which the government has reinforced with a set of social programs, including the generalization of health coverage to 4.2 million families benefiting from AMO-Solidarité, the aid program housing for 330,000 families over a period of 3 years, as well as the announcement of the increase in the salaries of employees and workers in the public and private sectors, as part of the round of social dialogue in April 2024, which will contribute to improving the purchasing power of more than 4 million Moroccan families, the system of subsidizing the price of butane gas will be partially reformed.

In this context, the press release continues, the overall reform of the social protection system will continue through the implementation of the framework law n°09.21 relating thereto (…), article 8 of which stipulates that the aid program direct social is financed through the compilation and generalization of various social programs, in addition to the partial reform of the Compensation Fund, in the sense that the government has allocated 80 billion dirhams, by 2026, to finance various social programs, in addition to implementing the results of social dialogue, notably through salary increases.

And therefore, notes the ministry, “from May 20, the partial reduction in the subsidy for butane gas cylinders will be activated, for the year 2024”specifying that “the price of the 12 kg gas cylinder will thus be increased by 10 DH to 50 DH and that of 3 kg will see its price increased by 2.50 DH”.
