A magnitude 2.7 earthquake was felt on the morning of Monday October 7 in Caen (Calvados). This kind of phenomenon is not very common in Normandy. The National Seismic Monitoring Network (Rénass) invites people who felt this earthquake to testify on its site.
The earth shook in Caen (Calvados) this Monday, October 7. A magnitude 2.7 earthquake was recorded by the National Seismic Monitoring Network (Rénass) at 9:34 a.m.
Its epicenter was in Cambes-en-Plaine.
This is a rare phenomenon in Normandy, according to Daniel Amorese, lecturer and seismologist at the University of Caen.
“It’s something that we rarely feel in Normandy. On the other hand, these earthquakes, of magnitude 3, occur roughly every 18 months, I would say. It’s not extremely rare, but it’s not very common either,” he declared at the microphone of BFM Normandie.
“An area where there are old faults”
This earthquake is a rather rare event in Normandy given its geographical position. According to this expert, the region “is not at all on a plate boundary, but on the other hand it is not without faults”.
“This is particularly the case for the western part of Normandy which is part of the Armorican massif, an ancient mountain range, an area where there are old faults which are still present,” he specifies.
For Daniel Amorese, there is nothing to worry about after this earthquake. “The only point that could be worrying is if, in the coming days, we had earthquakes that would be a little bigger and in the same region.”
