There is something of a contradiction in seeing the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni (far right), championing sovereignty while holding high-level discussions with the American firm SpaceX to provide Italy with of an extranational communication system.

If the negotiations led to an agreement, Italy would become the first member state of the European Union (EU) to venture down such a path with the company of billionaire Elon Musk, a sign of its patent Atlanticism. An option all the more problematic since the billionaire will take, from January 20, the head of a commission for “governmental efficiency” within the government of Donald Trump. As such, he holds two hats mixing public and private powers.

This contract, estimated at 1.5 billion euros for a period of five years, provides for the provision of secure Internet access via the Starlink system for operations of the Italian government and its army in
